MEDITATION - APRIL

ONTARIO BRANCH NEWS

MEDITATION -APRIL 2010

An Easter Prayer

O God of Easter,
God of resurrection power,
Bring heavenly life to our
earthbound souls.

Thou, who did'st call Lazarus forth
from his tomb,
Call us forth from dead works,
and let our hearts be aglow
with immortal glory and power.

Call us out of the tomb of hollow profession,
Of cold creeds, and wordy ritual,
And let Thy life abundant permeate and
Saturate our stagnant souls,

Bringing joy where there is heaviness of heart.
Bring peace where there is confusion;
Bring love where there is bitterness;
And may we henceforth live in
the glorious glow of The Life
which that first Easter poured
forth upon a world of darkness.

And may we always be mindful of the
source of this life-giving power,
And come to Thee regularly to be refilled.
In the Savior's name. Amen

ONTARIO BRANCH CONVENTION

The 64th Convention of the Ontario Branch opened with a church service on Friday evening, April 24 at Southminster United Church in Ottawa. It included music, a memorial tribute to honour six late members, Holy Communion and an admission ceremony for new members. A unique aspect of the evening was that one of the new members, Rev. Kathryn Peate, conducted the service and delivered a very thoughtful message. We were fortunate to have International President Frances Sellew with us to lead the admission ceremony and welcome the new members.

The Convention resumed the next morning at 9:30 in the lounge of the King's Daughters and Sons apartments. The main thrust of the morning concerned membership renewal. Frances Sellew introduced the topic from the perspective of the whole Order. Then Vince Ciarlo, Onario Branch Membership Chairman, led us in a workshop using a handout he developed entitled "Membership Development Starter Kit". There was soon a lively buzz in the room as people worked in small groups and later shared ideas.

After enjoying a lovely buffet luncheon, the highlight of the day was the presenting of citations by Frances Sellew. Silver Cross Circle received a 70 year citation followed by individual citations for Phyllis Lyon (90 years), Gwen Richards (70 years), Brenda Locke (40) years and Dolly Wilson (25 years). After these had been presented, Phoebe McLelland announced that Gwen Richards was to receive a Founder's Award. Phoebe outlined Gwen's involvement and dedication to the Order over her 70 years of service and after receiving her Founder's pin from Frances, Gwen took the podium to thank the gathering.

The remainder of the afternoon was spent in the usual business of reports, bylaw changes and elections.

The closing reception and banquet was held at Macie's Best Western. Christine Dawson was the MC for the evening. After an enjoyable meal, Frances Sellew installed the new Ontario Branch Executive and then gave a warm and entertaining address. The evening entertainment was praise music provided by the group "The Road to Damascus". The evening concluded with Bruce McLelland announcing the excellent results of the silent auction that had been going on throughout the evening.
As people gathered their belongings and said their farewells, there was already a feeling of anticipation for our next convention in 2011.

Gwen also received a 70-year member citation and the Founders Award, and Dolly Wilson received a 25 year citation.

John Dawson, member and Frances Sellew, International President, look over the route sheet before heading out to deliver meal-on-wheels during Frances' April 24th visit to the Ontario Branch Convention, Ottawa, Canada. The Kings Daughters Dinner Wagon provides over 100,000 meals each year to those who require help due to age, frailty, illness or disability.
