| "Being
a member [of The King's Daughters and Sons] has introduced me to many industrious,
creative men and women, some of whom have become life-long friends. Membership
has given me an opportunity to put my religious philosophy into action,
because I believe we are here to do the Lord's work on earth and membership
offers plenty of opportunities for that. It has provided chances for leadership
development as well as spiritual development, has introduced me to an enchanting
place called Chautauqua, and has made it possible for me and my daughter's
family to work together in an organization we all admire and respect." Nancy Barret, Chairperson, Membership Extension Committee. Founded January 13, 1886, the International Order of The King's Daughters and Sons is an international and interdenominational organization of Christian men and women dedicated to service in Christ's name. The objects of the Order are "the development of spiritual life and the stimulation of Christian activities." Its threefold program is Religious, Educational and Philanthropic, with the purpose of training its members for Christian Service. The aim of the Order is taken from Mark 10:45, "Not to be ministered unto, but to minister." The badge of the Order is a silver Maltese cross inscribed with the letters IHN representing the watchword of the Order, In His Name. Since to look upward is to trust, to look forward is to hope, to look outward is to feel the pain of others, and to lend a hand is only love in action, the members have as their motto:
"Anyone whose aims and purposes are in accord with its objects and who holds himself or herself responsible to The King, our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ" is eligible to join the Order, according to the By-laws. Members are organized in Circles and the Order is presently active in Branches (states and provinces) and several foreign countries. Its International Headquarters is located at Chautauqua, New York. The official means of communication for the Order is The Silver Cross Magazine which is published bimonthly. How can I join? Would you like to become a member? Do you know some Christian friends with whom you would like to work? Circles may be organized with three or more members who are interested in the purposes of the Order and subscribe to its membership requirements. Each local group may choose its own service work. For more information about membership in the Order, see our "Membership" section or find contact information on our "Contact" page. |
Chautauqua
Scholarship Program
As a teenager,
I was finally given the opportunity to join the Order. My mother was a
member, my younger sister and brother were both members of Junior Circles
but there were no Circles for teenagers. In 1948, Thelma Welch Hodges
organized a teenage circle when I was in High School and at last, there
was a place for me to belong to The King's Daughters and Sons...The King's
Daughters and Sons is a top priority in my life. |
