FIRST ANNUAL JENNIE C. BENEDICT LUNCHEON IN LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY
Jay and Berenice Townsend, Hope Circle of Louisville, and Jean Donovan, Norma Beasey, and Zerilda Frantz, all of the Jennie C. Benedict Circle of Shelbyville, Kentucky. It was a beautiful day for the First Annual Jennie C. Benedict Memorial Luncheon held at the Masterson's Restaurant in Louisville, Kentucky on July 25, 2009. Last year a memorial service was held at her grave in the Cave Hill Cemetery, marking the 80th anniversary of her death. Kentucky's Governor, two senators, and Louisville's Mayor sent notes of congratulations. The Mayor declared July 24th, "Jennie C. Benedict Day". This year the luncheon drew a group of 26 individuals. We had two International Officers: Deb Hurd, International Junior Director, and Meredith Houghton, International Around the World Director. Also present were three Branch Presidents: Helen Stoner - Kentucky; Kathy Auxier - Indiana; and Tom Houghton - Illinois. A display table was set up with pictures of Miss Jennie, her homes in the Louisville area, her two books, and various other Order materials, including all the Order histories. A short program was given by Kentucky Vice-President and Life Member of Central Council, Charles Thompson. A drawing was held for a new copy of the 8th edition of Jennie Benedict's cookbook. Helen Stoner, Kentucky Branch President, was the winner. After a wonderful luncheon the group moved on to the Cave Hill Cemetery where a short memorial service was held. Afterward, homemade Benedictine, a Jennie Benedict original, was served with crackers and drinks. Chairs were unfolded for some members requiring them. Mr. Kirby Smith of Hope Circle had made a beautiful wreath for Miss Jennie's tombstone. Miss Jennie would
have been so pleased. |
