Scholarships Give Hope
From an article by Vic Trautwein, Co-Field Director, Kids Alive Dominican Republic Thinking about Rosanny not only encourages me, but also challenges me to live selflessly. When we first met Nany five years ago, her house didnt have windows. She had grown up in our ANIJA program (her mom, Carmen is the school cook) and she had just graduated from eighth grade. This in itself is significant here as only one in five children in the Dominican Republic achieve this level of education. In recent years, she has enthusiastically taught Vacation Bible School for Kids Alive during the summer, capably taught weekly Sunday school for 30 young children at her church, and last year, after graduating from high school, diligently worked as an assistant teacher in our Palo Blanco Care Center for a year. Her incredible ability to relate to impoverished children and natural energy make her a more effective teacher than most of our missionaries. In one legendary moment two years ago, she described heaven to a group of very poor Dominican children saying, Imagine a place where you are never hungry. Imagine. Certainly Nanys academic achievements and rise to positions of responsibility are stunning considering her humble beginnings. This year she is a full-time university student studying medicine (with the help of a scholarship from The International Order of the Kings Daughters and Sons) with plans to become a pediatrician. But more impressive than her academic achievements are her heart to serve and vision to live for something bigger than herself. Sometimes, as part of my role, I inquire about her needs. Within minutes, the conversation turns to what and when she can do something to help in the ministry. Most of her selfless acts are not done within a formal program or will ever be noted on a resume. She loves those God places in her path neighbors, family, missionaries, strangers. She is wired to give sacrificially to the point that it seems to be her source of joy. Her education and abilities assure that she will never again live in poverty. But her desire to study medicine comes from a desire to develop her talents in order to help people in a profound way and has little or nothing do with future earnings potential. What a blessing to see a little girl in a day program grow into a young woman who has become a radical giver set apart for Gods good purposes. She is a young person with a big vision to serve God by serving others, and this is what so encourages me. For more about Rosanny, click here.
